STUDIES IN AUSTRALIAN GARDEN
HISTORY
This is a scholarly journal, the first of its kind in Australia.
With seven major refereed articles, this journal presents 128 pages
of illustrated research into aspects of cultural history, gardens,
botanic illustration and historic garden management issues.
The authors are either academic or independent scholars. The aim was
to encourage more interest in scholarship in garden history to expand
on the work of the Oxford Companion to Australian
Gardens and provide scholars with a vehicle to make public their
research. Each article is over 5,000 words so is quite different in nature
from the Journal, Australian Garden History.
Studies has been made possible by the benefaction of Joan Law Smith through 'The Kindred Spirits Fund'
Volume One
Launched in July 2003, Studies in Australian Garden History Volume One deals with issues across the spectrum of gardens and landscapes and their intersection with cultural and art history as well as issues to do with the management of recent gardens of significance.
Volume One is now out of print.
Volume Two Out Now!
Weeds in the Garden State
Australia ’s love affair with gardens and gardening has been closely bound up with the introduction of weeds for almost two hundred years.
The latest edition of the Journal Studies in Australian Garden History features an article documenting the steady and relentless importation of weeds into the Garden State of Victoria and the rest of Australia. John Dwyer in his article “Weeds in the Colonial Garden” records the steady importation of more and more plants that got away. He also documents the early, frequently futile, efforts by legislators, to stop the process.
Six other articles make up Volume Two of Studies in Australian Garden History .
Articles as diverse as the War efforts at vegetable gardening, to the “War of the Roses” in Canberra, from pictorial studies in the nineteenth century of the Dandenong Ranges to literary reflections of gardens make up a diverse, and stimulating collection of papers of current research into the history of gardens, gardening, landscapes and culture.
