Tas Branch: A northern excursion to Wychwood at Mole Creek and Old Wesleydale at Chudleigh

21 April 2017

Friday 21 April: A Northern Excursion to Wychwood at Mole Creek and Old Wesleydale at Chudleigh.

Earlier this year Melbourne city gardeners David Doukidis and Matt Bendall bought this property from its creators and long-time owners Peter Cooper and Karen Hall. The new owners will guide us through the garden which covers just over a hectare, with plantings of rare and heritage apple orchards, roses and perennials and many beautiful cool climate trees.

Old Wesley Dale (1861)

Deb and Scott Wilson started to create their garden in 2001 around some wonderful old trees including birches, liquid ambers and poplars. They developed a peaceful English style garden with plantings defined by hedges and walls. Perhaps the best known feature of the garden is the Elephant hedge of Lonicera nitida. The striking HaHa wall was built to serve as an invisible barrier between the stock paddock and the garden while drawing in the natural borrowed landscape.

11:30 am Meet at Old Wesleydale. Explore the garden. Deb and Scott will be available to tell us about this wonderful garden. Bring a picnic and a rug or chairs to enjoy lunch in the garden or in the stable if the weather is unkind. Tea, coffee available

1.30 pm Drive to Wychwood. (8 kms). Meet David and Matt and explore the garden and the nursery. Tea, coffee available

COST : $25 members, $40 non-members
