Vic Branch: Walk and Talk at Birrarung Marr

21 February 2019 @ 6:00 pm AEDT

Walk and Talk Birrarung Marr with one of the original concept designers, Ron Jones

In 1856 the colonial government set aside the marshy land we now know as Birrarung Marr for a park. Birrarung Marr, meaning “River of Mists” or “Riverbank” in Woiwurrung, the language of the Wurundjeri people of the Melbourne region, was opened in 2002 in its present form.

The site variously saw a morgue, the old State Swimming Centre and rail lines, which first crossed the area in 1859 and eventually covered most of the area. Towards the end of the 19th century the Yarra River was straightened, widened and deepened, with tree-lined avenues formed along the built-up banks.

In 1992, the creation of Birrarung Marr resulted from the reorganisation of infrastructure and land uses near Federation Square, including clearance of the Jolimont railyards. The project was a joint venture by the City of Melbourne, and the State of Victoria. The park was formally opened to the public on Australia Day, 26 January 2002. The concept plan for Birrarung Marr was prepared by the City of Melbourne, with in-house landscape architect Ronald Jones as one of the principal designers.

We are fortunate to have Ron to guide us around the site on this evening.
