Victoria Branch: AGM 2025 and guest speaker

6 August @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm AEST

The Annual General Meeting of the Victorian Branch of the AGHS will be followed by our guest speaker, Dr Susan Reidy.

Lecture: Is Big Better? A Little History of How Everyone Wants a Piece of Australia’s Largest City Parks

There are several exceptionally large public parks in Australia’s state capital cities, and we are lucky to have them. That they survive, in all their hugeness, is something of a wonder. Because we expect big city parks to contain many things, and such treatment challenges efforts to preserve their capaciousness, naturalness and amenity. How have these parks survived, to be valued as attractive places of recreation, nature, beauty and heritage, despite their allure as empty space waiting to be filled?

Speaker: Dr Susan Reidy is a social historian specialising in Australia’s urban landscapes, especially public parks, gardens and recreation grounds. She is a long-time member of the AGHS and a current member of the Victorian branch committee.
