Palawa tunapri, compiled by Palawa woman Trisha Hodge, is the end result of 20 years’ work putting together a list of more than 340 Tasmanian native plants, categorised under food, medicine, tools and seasons.

Hodge believes that by preserving and disseminating this knowledge, shared for at least 20,000 years, the Tasmanian Aboriginal community can continue to grow stronger and non-Indigenous readers can join them in caring for Country.

This is not her knowledge, but the knowledge of her community, gathered and shared for over 40,000 years. This special field guide is a must for those travelling in Tasmania and for others interested in a First Nations perspective on Australian plants, many of which grow on the mainland as well as Tasmania.

Publication of this book was supported by the Kindred Spirits Fund.

TRISH HODGE is a proud descendant of Manalakina, Chief of the Truwulway people of Northeast Tasmania, his daughter, Watamutiya, and her daughter Dolly Dalrymple.

With more than 20 years of experience as a tour guide and eight years as a successful business owner, she is well-established as an expert in her field. She served as the native plant edibles expert on the television show Alone and has contributed significantly to the development of resources on Tasmanian native foods and advised on many ‘Bush Tucker’ gardens located around Tasmania.
