Victoria Branch: Walk and Talk – Burnley Gardens, Burnley
The Heritage listed Burnley Gardens date back to 1860 when the Horticulture Society of Victoria established experimental gardens. The aim was to introduce new plants to the colonies, and to promote botanical and horticultural science. The land was granted to the Society on the basis that the land would always be accessible to the public free of charge, except on exhibition days. The initial design of the gardens was the result of a landscape gardener, Alfred Lynch, winning a design competition.
We will get to enjoy a guided walk by members of the Friends of Burnley who will provide us with the history of the Gardens and its plants, some of which are as old as the Gardens themselves. Three of the trees are on the National Tree Register as Significant Trees.
