Southern Highlands Branch: Bus trip to Kiama

You are warmly invited to join us for a day bus trip to Kiama, where coastal history and garden interest sit side by side. Our visit will include a briefing and tour of the restored Pilot’s Cottage Museum at Blowhole Point, with its glimpse into Kiama’s maritime and community past, followed by a guided bus tour of the heritage areas of the town. We will then travel to the garden centre, Burnetts on Barney, where members may browse the nursery and enjoy lunch at the conservatory in the Quarry Café beneath the old basalt quarry walls prior to returning by bus to the Southern Highlands. Detailed itinerary below.

Cost: $75 per member, $85 per friend.

Kiama Day Bus Trip – Itinerary
8.00 am – Bus arrives Mittagong RSL car park
8.15 am – Depart Mittagong RSL car park
8.45 am – Bus arrives Moss Vale Services Club car park
8.50 am – Depart Moss Vale Services Club car park
10.15 am – Arrive (approx.) Kiama Information Centre – Toilet facilities available and coffee
available from Diggie’s Café next door
10.30 am – Pilot’s Cottage Museum guided tour (45 mins approx.)
11.15 am – Walk to Blowhole Point – short walk only
11.30 am – Board bus for guided tour of Kiama township (45 mins approx.)
12.30 pm – Arrive (approx.) Burnetts on Barney for lunch and nursery visit
2.00 pm – Depart (approx.) for Highlands
3.30 pm – Arrive Moss Vale (approx.) and then on to Mittagong for final drop off.

Highlights of our guided tour of Kiama:
• The group leaves the museum on foot, walk 3 minutes to see the famous blowhole, and prominent lighthouse. The group will then board the coach parked near the lighthouse.
• Coach circulates round Blowhole Point where our guide, Sue will tell us about the magnificent harbour, with Robertson Basin celebrating 150 years in 2026.
• The journey continues along Terralong Street, past the heritage listed post office, courthouse and police station – and police residence which Sue is fighting to preserve.
• Along Shoalhaven Street, past Black Beach then left on Minnamurra Street past the former infants’ school (now the Sebel Hotel), then along Pheasant Point heritage conservation area.
• Down Collins Street, past the 1870s miners’ cottages and former temperance hall along Terralong Street. Kiama Leagues Club a major entertainment venue first as the Oddfellows Hall, then a club in 1957. Terralong Street is Kiama’s main commercial centre, destroyed by two fires in 1899.
• Pass through the mining sites at Pikes Hill.
• Back down Terralong Street, this time viewing Hindmarsh Park and Tory’s Hotel.
• Right down Manning Street, the town’s civic heart with grand bank buildings and the old council chambers, then past the Grand Hotel and the site of David Smith’s house – Kiama’s first permanent European settler.
