Keeping gardening books alive

In the July 2026 issue of Australian Garden History, Sandra Pullman wrote about two Australian women garden writers: Mrs Rolf Boldrewood who published The Flower Garden in Australia: A Book for Ladies and Amateurs in 1893; and Mrs Arthur Tuckett, whose A Year in My Garden came out in 1905.

You can find these publications by searching TROVE , thanks to the AGHS ACTMR Branch project 2018-2020 -Digitising early Australian gardening books, led by Greg Johnson.

Another important record of Australian gardening writing is the late Victor Crittenden’s, A history of Australian Gardening Books and Bibliography, 1806-1950, which is now available on our website (a second edition is out of print). Victor Crittenden OAM was an active member of the ACT Monaro and Riverina Branch. You can listen to his oral history here.
